How to Handle Gaps in Your Resume

San Antonio Career Coach | Business Coaching | Personal CoachingHaving gaps in your employment can raise a flag to some employers.  The best way to handle gaps in your resume is to be honest and point out personal and professional growth during your employment gaps.  Here are ways to handle gaps in your resume.

  • Explain the reason for your gap in a cover letter or interview.  Did you take time off to have a baby or start a business?
  • Explain what personal or professional growth you made during your unemployment.  If you started a business, you will have learned better time and financial management.
  • If you were laid off due to the economy, the employer will understand.  There are times when loosing a job was out of your control.

Make sure your resume highlights your skills and accomplishments rather than dates.  Start your resume with a business objective or summary.  This way you are focusing on your value and what you can do for the employer.

Most important is to be confident and keep a positive attitude and you will show the employer that you are ready to return back to work.

Harper Resource Group career coaching professionals are committed to working with you to develop strategies that will produce the results that lead to career success.
