In our article “How to Brand Yourself”, we talked about your value proposition. Why should a company choose you? What makes you unique? Now that you have all of that summed up in your hardcopy resume, how do you express your value verbally? Your resume got you in the door now it’s time to show them your personality. You only get two minutes to make an impression and sell yourself. After that you have lost your potential employers attention.
A verbal resume is designed to provide a concise, two-minute recap of your past, present and future which sets the tone for the rest of the interview.
Here are some tips on how to design your two-minute resume.
- Write your bio script that will answer the questions: “Tell me about yourself”, “Why are you looking?”, and “What do you want to do?” Practice your script.
- Prepare Life History (90 seconds): Describe your pre-work, past work and present work.
- Prepare Transition Statement (10 seconds): Brief, factual, positive and future-oriented
- Prepare Focal Point (20 seconds): Tell’em your target
- Keep it short. No more then two minutes.
- Project a positive outward appearance.
- Speak clearly and make good eye contact.
Preparing a good verbal resume will show confidence and make you stand out from the crowd and help you achieve career success!
