You felt your interview went well last week. You were prepared, asked the right questions, you fit their company culture, you had all of the qualifications for the job, and you know you looked great in your new suit. However, you received a letter from the employer saying they offered the job to someone else. This can be very disappointing and discouraging. Stay positive and take this opportunity to improve in areas that need attention.
It is O.K. to contact the hiring manager or human resources manager and ask for feedback if you do it in a professional and nonthreatening way. Here are a few tips on how to ask for feedback when you didn’t get the job:
- Send an email to the person which you interviewed thanking them for the interview and how you are disappointed you were not selected for the position.
- Ask if there are any suggestions they could give you so you can prepare for future opportunities.
- Regardless of their response, thank them for their time and move forward.
Having the courage to ask for feedback can give you an advantage. This shows the employer that you were interested in the position. You may have been the second choice and if the initial hire does not work out, there is a chance you will be reconsidered for the position.
