You have been unemployed for much longer then you expected. A few months ago you were offered a job but you turned it down. Now that you are still unemployed, you wonder should you ask for the job you turned down.
It is not a bad idea. However, depending on the reason you turned down the offer, be prepared with an explanation for asking for the job now. Here are some tips for asking for a job you previously turned down:
- If it was because of money, explain that you have learned that in this economy salaries have fluctuated and you are more prepared to accept an offer.
- If it was because you accepted another offer, explain that you thought the job you accepted was a better fit but now you have found out that it is not. It’s O.K. to admit you made a mistake.
- If it was because at the time the job did not help your career, explain that you have decided to make a career transition and that the job is a better fit for your new career goals.
Asking for a job you previously turned down can be awkward and uncomfortable but can be done. As long as you are honest and professional you may be surprised at their response. After all they did offer you the job.
