To be competitive in today’s job market, you need to use all resources when looking for a job. One very powerful one is networking. More jobs are found by networking with friends, family, colleagues and even strangers then by advertisements. Here are a few ways to be effective in finding your next job through networking:
- Join a couple of networking groups to share your talent and experience. Being informative is a great way to build your network and at the same time you will be making people aware of your need for employment.
- Create an account on LinkedIn. This is a great way to connect with people in your industry or people with the same position that you are seeking. Theses connections can let you know when positions come available in their company.
- Pick up the phone. Make a list of the companies you would like to work for and contact the hiring manager. Call your friends and colleagues and just have coffee with them every other week. Keep in touch with your network and they will remember you when an opportunity comes available.
This can seem time consuming and overwhelming but it is time well spent. Building a great network can help you find your next job but the benefits will last a lifetime.
